Fresh ice makes Enceladus one of the brightest worlds known

Fresh ice makes Enceladus one of the brightest worlds known

Enceladus reflects nearly all the sunlight that hits it — a geometric albedo near 1 — because plume fallout and tectonic resurfacing coat the moon in clean, fine-grained water ice.

Dark rock and old radiation-baked ices elsewhere look dull by comparison. Cassini’s images of the tiger-stripe south made that mirror-bright surface famous while sampling the spray that refreshes it.

Brightness is a geologic billboard. Enceladus stays dazzling because its interior keeps feeding the surface with new ice, linking albedo to active ocean-world plumbing.
