A supernova can briefly outshine its whole galaxy

When a massive star explodes as a supernova — or a white dwarf detonates in a binary — the blast can pour out more light for weeks than billions of ordinary stars combined.

That flare seeds space with heavy elements: the gold in jewelry and the iron in blood trace back to stellar deaths. Remnants expand into glowing nebulae for millennia.

Death can be the brightest chapter. Supernovae are both endings and cosmic recycling plants that build the chemistry of later worlds.
