Escaping Jupiter’s gravity takes roughly 60 km/s

Escaping Jupiter’s gravity takes roughly 60 km/s

From near Jupiter’s cloud tops, escape velocity is on the order of 60 kilometers per second — several times Earth’s 11.2 km/s — because the planet packs more than 300 Earth masses into a huge radius still dense with gravity.

Probes that visit Jupiter often use gravity assists and carefully timed burns rather than “outrunning” that speed from rest. Moons and rings orbit inside a deep potential well that also shapes the magnetosphere.

Escape speed ranks planetary muscle. Jupiter’s number explains why leftover planetesimals struggle to leave and why the giant dominates dynamical traffic in the outer system.
