Valles Marineris on Mars stretches longer than the USA is wide
Valles Marineris is a canyon system on Mars roughly 4,000 km long — longer than the contiguous United States is wide — and in places several times deeper than the Grand Canyon.
Tectonic stretching and later landslides and floods likely carved and widened the rift. It is a scar of planetary geology written across a whole hemisphere.
Scale on Mars humbles Earth landmarks. One canyon chain can outrun a continent’s width and still leave room for dust storms at both ends.
