Uranus’s epsilon ring is densest ribbon in that faint system

Uranus’s epsilon ring is densest ribbon in that faint system

Among Uranus’s narrow rings, the epsilon ring stands out as the broadest and most substantial — denser and more variable in width than its siblings, with edges sculpted by the shepherd moons Cordelia and Ophelia.

Occultation data and Voyager imaging showed epsilon brightening and thickening as particle piles shift. It is still dark compared with Saturn’s B ring, but it dominates Uranus’s ring mass budget.

One loud ribbon teaches faint systems. Epsilon proves even a charcoal ring network can have a heavyweight lane that concentrates dust and ice where moons tug hardest.
