Some lunar lava tubes may span kilometers wide

Some lunar lava tubes may span kilometers wide

Because lunar gravity is weak, lava tubes can stay stable at sizes that would collapse on Earth. Radar sounding and gravity voids suggest some may be hundreds of meters to kilometers across.

Orbital images of skylight collapses give scale clues. If confirmed by future landers or hoppers, they would dwarf most terrestrial caves.

Low gravity builds bigger rooms underground. Lunar tubes could be natural cathedrals for bases — if we can enter safely.
