Proxima Centauri is the nearest star beyond our Sun

Just over four light-years away, the red dwarf Proxima Centauri is the closest known star to the Sun — still an immense gulf compared with any planet in our solar system.

It hosts at least one confirmed planet in its temperate zone, which is why nearby-star missions and telescopes keep circling its name. Even “nearest” means decades of travel with today’s rockets.

Proximity is relative. Proxima is our stellar next-door neighbor on a map of the galaxy — and still farther than any human has ever gone.
