Moon dust builds Jupiter’s main ring plus halo and gossamer bands

Moon dust builds Jupiter’s main ring plus halo and gossamer bands

Jupiter’s faint rings are not ice sheets like Saturn’s: micrometeoroid impacts on small inner moons loft dust that forms a flattened main ring, a toroidal halo, and two extended gossamer bands tied to Amalthea and Thebe.

Galileo and later imaging tied particle sizes and orbits to those moon sources. The dust is dark and sparse, so the system stays nearly invisible except to sensitive cameras looking edge-on or in scattered light.

Rings can be moon factories’ exhaust. Jupiter proves a giant can wear a dusty, moon-fed necklace without Saturn’s bright ice spectacle.
