Launched in 1973, Mariner 10 used a Venus gravity assist to reach Mercury — the first spacecraft to visit the innermost planet.
Three flybys mapped about half the cratered surface and sensed a magnetic field no one expected from such a small world. Heat and glare made the approach brutal.
A sun-blasted neighbor finally got a visitor. Mariner 10 proved even Mercury was within reach.
