Spent Shuttle solid rocket boosters were recovered from the sea
After burnout, the Shuttle’s twin solid rocket boosters parachuted into the Atlantic, where retrieval ships towed the empty cases back for cleaning, inspection, and refurbishment for later flights.
Reuse cut costs compared with building every booster from scratch, though the ocean dunk demanded careful corrosion control. The recovery flotilla was part of every launch day’s choreography.
A splashdown was not the end of a booster’s career. SRB recovery made solid rockets part of a reusable logistics chain.
