Sagittarius A* weighs about 4 million Suns

At the center of the Milky Way sits Sagittarius A*, a black hole of about 4 million solar masses, revealed by stars whipping around an invisible point.

In 2022 the Event Horizon Telescope released an image of its shadow — a dark silhouette ringed by glowing gas. Nothing inside that horizon can send light back out.

Our galaxy’s heart is not a bright cluster. It is a quiet giant, and the orbits of nearby stars are the scale used to weigh it.
