NASA’s Opportunity rover was built for a 90-sol mission. It kept rolling from 2004 until a global dust storm in 2018 cut off the sunlight its solar panels needed.
Along the way it found strong evidence of past liquid water and clocked marathon distances across Meridiani Planum. Spirit, its twin, also far outlasted the plan.
Overperformance became legend. A “short” Mars trip turned into a career measured in decades of sols.
