NASA’s EMU spacesuit stacks many protective layers

NASA’s EMU spacesuit stacks many protective layers

The Extravehicular Mobility Unit is not one fabric shell — it is a stack of layers that manage pressure, temperature, micrometeoroid strikes, and pure-oxygen breathing outside the airlock.

A liquid-cooling garment sits against the skin; a pressurized bladder and restraint layers hold shape; outer thermal and debris blankets take the hits from sunlight and tiny orbital junk. Gloves and helmets are separate engineered pieces with heaters and visors.

A suit is a wearable spacecraft. EMU layering turns vacuum into a workplace astronauts can walk through for hours.
