Lunar Gateway is planned as a Moon-orbit staging station

Gateway is the international outpost NASA and partners plan to assemble in lunar orbit as a waypoint for Artemis crews, science, and logistics.

Early elements include power, propulsion, and habitation modules that can host short stays and support lander operations toward the lunar south pole.

A station need not circle Earth forever. Gateway aims to park human deep-space infrastructure where the Moon’s gravity already holds the road.
