Buzz Aldrin joined Armstrong on the lunar surface in 1969

Minutes after Neil Armstrong stepped onto the Sea of Tranquility, Buzz Aldrin followed down the ladder of Eagle and became the second human on the Moon.

Together they deployed experiments, planted the flag, and collected rocks during a roughly two-hour EVA. Aldrin later described the bleak beauty as “magnificent desolation.”

A two-person surface team turned a single footprint into a shared workplace. Aldrin’s arrival made Apollo 11 a partnership on alien ground.
