Apollo lunar rovers extended exploration beyond walking range
The Lunar Roving Vehicle — a fold-out electric buggy flown on Apollo 15, 16, and 17 — let crews drive kilometers across the Moon instead of hopping slowly in bulky suits.
Wire-mesh wheels, battery power, and a navigation gyro kept traverses within safe walk-back distances if a rover failed. Sample stops and photo pans multiplied science return per precious EVA hour.
Wheels beat bootprints for coverage. The LRV turned the last Apollo landings into true geologic road trips.
