Apollo 8’s crew read Genesis while circling the Moon
On Christmas Eve 1968, Apollo 8 astronauts Frank Borman, Jim Lovell, and Bill Anders broadcast live from lunar orbit and read the opening verses of Genesis.
Millions watched as the Moon’s gray horizon framed a small, bright Earth. The reading closed a mission that first sent humans beyond low Earth orbit.
Words older than rockets met a brand-new vantage. Apollo 8 made lunar orbit feel like a shared human moment, not only an engineering feat.
