The calcaneus sits at the back of the foot and outweighs every other bone there. It is the first big contact when the heel strikes, and the anchor for the Achilles tendon coming down from the calf.
Its size is the point. A small bone would have to take the same landing force on a smaller face. The heel spreads that meeting with the ground.
Twenty-six bones share each foot. One of them is built as the bumper.
