The thumb has one fewer bone than each other finger

Each of the four fingers has three bones in the digit itself. The thumb has two. Count the long bone in the palm as well and the thumb’s whole ray is still one bone short of a finger’s.

That missing piece is part of why the thumb swings and opposes so well. It is a shorter chain with a saddle joint at its base, built to meet the fingers rather than to lie in a row with them.

Five digits, two designs. The one that looks stubbier is the one the grip depends on.
