The gluteus maximus is the largest muscle in the body

By bulk, the gluteus maximus wins. It forms most of the buttock and is the heaviest single skeletal muscle, built for powerful hip extension.

That job shows up when you climb stairs, stand from a chair, or sprint. Other muscles cover more skin — the latissimus dorsi is broader — but none outweigh this one in a typical adult.

Walking upright asked for a big engine at the back of the hip. Human locomotion still runs on that muscle more than on leg size alone.
