Some bones grow inside tendons

A sesamoid is a bone that forms inside a tendon, where the tendon crosses a joint and takes a lot of pressure. It works like a small pulley, giving the muscle a better angle of pull.

The kneecap is the largest. Two smaller ones almost always sit under the base of the big toe, inside the tendons that press the toe down. A few people also grow one behind the knee. The extras vary. The idea does not.

Not every bone starts as a piece of the skeleton’s plan. Some are answers the tendon writes later.
