Skeletal muscle is roughly 30 to 40 percent of body weight

In a typical adult, the muscles that pull on bones account for roughly 30 to 40 percent of body weight. The share sits higher in many men and in trained athletes, and lower in many women and with age. The range is the honest number.

That mass is not dead weight. It is the engine for movement, a large user of glucose, and a store the body can draw on when food is short. Heart muscle and the muscle in the gut are extra, outside this count.

Bone is the frame. This is the cargo that makes the frame worth having — nearly a third of you, and often more.
