Penicillin was discovered from a contaminated petri dish in 1928

Alexander Fleming noticed mold on a staphylococci plate killing nearby bacteria. That accidental contamination became the starting clue to penicillin, the first true antibiotic era drug.

Mass production in the 1940s turned once-deadly infections into treatable illnesses for millions. World War II urgency accelerated factories, purification, and clinical use worldwide.

The petri-dish story is luck plus sharp observation. It also warns that antibiotic power is not endless — resistance rises when those miracle molecules are overused.
