One blood donation is about a pint

A typical whole-blood donation is about one pint, roughly 470 milliliters. For an adult with about 5 liters of blood, that is around a tenth of the supply.

Plasma volume is replaced within a day or two as you drink and your body shifts fluid. Rebuilding the donated red cells takes several weeks, which is why donation centers space visits out.

The unit looks large in a bag and modest in the body. That ratio is what makes a routine donation possible.
