Bone is living tissue, not dry scaffolding. Osteoclasts clear worn matrix and osteoblasts lay down fresh collagen and mineral, so much of the adult skeleton turns over on a cycle of about a decade.

Spongy bone remodels faster than the dense outer shell. Load changes the plan: walking and lifting tell the builders where to add, and long rest tells them where they can thin it out.

You do not keep the thigh bone you had in childhood. The shape stays familiar while the material is quietly replaced.
