A healing bone first builds a callus

After a typical break, the body does not glue the edges in a hairline. It throws up a swollen bridge called a callus: first softer tissue, then woven bone that cuffs the gap.

That cuff is often thicker than the original shaft. Over months, and sometimes longer, remodeling pares it back toward the old shape and replaces the hasty bone with sturdier layers.

Healing is a detour, not a tape join. The bone gets a temporary bulge, then sculpts it down.
