A blue whale’s heart can weigh as much as a small car
A blue whale’s heart typically weighs around 180–200 kg — roughly the mass of a small car. That pump drives blood through the largest animal ever known to live on Earth.
Some arteries are so wide a human could crawl through them. Scale demands engineering: enough pressure and volume to feed muscles that power deep dives and ocean-spanning migrations.
The giant heart is a reminder that biology scales with physics. Bigger bodies need bigger plumbing, and the blue whale sits near the practical limit of how large an active mammal can grow.
