Yucatán cenotes are flooded sinkholes into underground rivers

Yucatán cenotes are flooded sinkholes into underground rivers

Cenotes across Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula are sinkholes whose collapsed roofs reveal turquoise windows into a vast freshwater maze of flooded caves and underground rivers.

Limestone karst lets rain vanish below the surface, so many communities historically depended on these openings for drinking water and ritual. Divers map passages that can stretch for many kilometers.

A hole in the jungle can be a doorway to a hidden watershed. Cenotes show caves may hold entire river systems you cannot see until the roof falls away.
