Wind-driven seiches rock entire lakes like water sloshing in a tub

Wind-driven seiches rock entire lakes like water sloshing in a tub

Strong winds can pile lake water toward one shore, tilting the surface. When the wind eases, the water rocks back and forth for hours — a standing wave called a seiche.

Harbor levels may rise and fall by tens of centimeters even under a clear sky. Large lakes and enclosed seas ring with their own natural periods set by length and depth.

A lake can have tides of weather, not moon. Seiches prove that wind alone can make an inland sea breathe in and out along its shores.
