Waterfall spray can feed mist forests of ferns and moss on cliff faces

Waterfall spray can feed mist forests of ferns and moss on cliff faces

Constant plunge mist keeps cliff alcoves humid even when the surrounding valley is dry. Ferns, mosses, liverworts, and spray-loving invertebrates cling to rock that would otherwise bake.

The microclimate is a thin envelope of evaporative cool and perpetual drip — a vertical wetland painted on stone. When flow drops in drought, those green walls can brown within days.

Not every forest needs soil underfoot. Waterfall mist forests prove that humidity alone can write a lush habitat onto a sheer wall of rock.
