Temperate rainforests thrive far from the tropics along cool, wet coasts

Not all rainforests are steamy and equatorial. Cool, rainy coasts — Pacific Northwest, southern Chile, parts of New Zealand and Tasmania — grow towering temperate rainforests thick with moss, ferns, and ancient conifers.

Mild winters and heavy precipitation keep growth year-round even without tropical heat. Epiphytes and nurse logs echo tropical patterns in a colder key.

“Rainforest” is a climate recipe, not a latitude stamp. Fog, ocean, and mountains can brew one far from the equator.
