Tambora’s 1815 eruption helped create a year without a summer
Indonesia’s Mount Tambora erupted in April 1815 in one of history’s largest recorded blasts, injecting sulfur aerosols high into the stratosphere.
Global temperatures dipped; 1816 became known in parts of Europe and North America as the “Year Without a Summer,” with crop failures and unusual snow.
One mountain can chill a hemisphere. Tambora shows volcanoes are climate actors, not only local hazards.
