Star dunes rise where desert winds keep changing direction

Star dunes rise where desert winds keep changing direction

When winds arrive from several seasons or storm tracks, sand builds a central peak with radiating arms — a star dune that can tower tens of meters above the plain.

Unlike one-way barchans, grains are shuffled around the pyramid rather than marched steadily downwind, so star dunes often stay put while growing taller.

Complexity leaves a signature. A many-armed dune is a wind rose sculpted in sand — climate written as architecture.
