Spheroidal weathering peels rock into rounded onion-skin shells

Spheroidal weathering peels rock into rounded onion-skin shells

Water and chemical attack work fastest along joints and corners, so buried blocks weather inward from all sides. Outer shells loosen and peel like onion layers, leaving rounded cores called spheroidal or onion-skin weathering.

Exhumed tors and boulder fields often show this geometry — sharp underground cubes softened into soft spheres at the surface.

Rock does not always shatter. Sometimes it sheds coats, proving that chemistry plus corners can sculpt stone into natural spheres.
