Some lizards can squirt blood from their eyes

Horned lizards can rupture sinus vessels near the eyes and squirt a stream of blood — a startling, foul-tasting blast that puts predators off.

The display looks extreme because it is: a last-resort billboard saying this meal is not worth it.

Defense can be disgusting on purpose. Blood becomes a message written in the air between lizard and teeth.
