Soil erosion can strip topsoil centuries faster than natural formation rebuilds it

Soil erosion can strip topsoil centuries faster than natural formation rebuilds it

Under native cover, soils often form at millimeters per century as rock weathers and organic matter accumulates. Exposed plowland or clear-cut slopes can lose millimeters to centimeters in a single heavy storm.

Lost topsoil carries carbon, seeds, and microbial communities downhill into streams, leaving thinner, less fertile horizons behind. Restoration plantings and contour structures slow the hemorrhage but cannot instantly remake what took ages.

Soil is a renewable resource on geologic time, not human seasons. Erosion turns a slow inheritance into a flash export to the nearest river.
