Sinkholes can open overnight when limestone cave roofs collapse

Sinkholes can open overnight when limestone cave roofs collapse

A sinkhole can appear almost overnight when the roof of a buried limestone cave thins until it fails, dropping soil, roads, or buildings into a sudden pit.

Groundwater dissolution, heavy rains, drought, and human pumping can all weaken the span. Some collapses are meters across; others swallow city blocks in dramatic failures.

Stable ground can be an illusion over hollow rock. Sinkholes warn that karst landscapes keep editing the surface from below without asking permission.
