Rewilding large herbivores can restart trophic cascades across landscapes

Rewilding large herbivores can restart trophic cascades across landscapes

When bison, beavers, or other missing megafauna return, their grazing, browsing, and damming reshape vegetation structure, create wetlands, and open niches for insects, birds, and scavengers.

Predators and scavengers follow the new prey and carrion; seed dispersal and nutrient hotspots shift with dung and wallows. The cascade is ecological engineering written in appetite and behavior.

Rewilding is not nostalgia alone. Restoring key consumers can rebuild habitat complexity that decades of absence had flattened into simplified fields and scrub.
