Pamukkale’s white terraces grow from calcium-rich hot springs

Pamukkale’s white terraces grow from calcium-rich hot springs

Pamukkale in Türkiye looks like frozen waterfalls of chalk, but the white terraces are travertine deposited as calcium-rich hot spring water cools and loses carbon dioxide.

Mineral crusts build rimstone dams and shallow pools that cascade down the hillside. Ancient cities prized the site for bathing; today visitors still walk the gleaming shelves.

A spring can paint a mountain white. Pamukkale shows geothermal water is also a slow sculptor of stone.
