One hectare of Amazon rainforest can host over 100 tree species
In many central Amazon plots, botanists counting stems find staggering local richness — often well over a hundred tree species packed into a single hectare, far denser than temperate woods.
Rare specialists share space with common pioneers; neighbors may barely share a genus. That mix makes every cleared patch a unique loss.
Diversity here is neighborhood-scale. Walk a soccer field of Amazon forest and you can meet more tree kinds than some countries hold in total.
