Old-growth forests lock carbon for centuries in wood, roots, and deep litter

Old-growth forests lock carbon for centuries in wood, roots, and deep litter

Centuries-old stands keep packing carbon into massive trunks, coarse roots, fallen logs, and soils that young plantations have not yet rebuilt. Much of that stock stays locked until fire, logging, or decay finally releases it.

Replanting helps, but it does not instantly replace an old-growth carbon vault or the complex habitats giants create.

Time is a forest product. Protecting ancient woods keeps yesterday’s carbon out of tomorrow’s air.
