Niagara’s crest has been cutting upstream for thousands of years

Niagara’s crest has been cutting upstream for thousands of years

Niagara Falls has been eroding upstream for thousands of years as the Niagara River undercuts soft shale beneath harder limestone, causing the crest to retreat toward Lake Erie.

Engineering and flow diversion have slowed the modern retreat, but the falls remain a moving landmark on the U.S.–Canada border.

Waterfalls are temporary architecture. Niagara’s fame is a slow migration written in rock and mist.
