Namib may be Earth’s oldest desert still in place today

Namib may be Earth’s oldest desert still in place today

The Namib along Africa’s southwest coast is often cited as one of Earth’s oldest deserts, with arid conditions lasting tens of millions of years while dunes still march inland from the Atlantic fog belt.

Cold Benguela currents cool the air and suppress rain, leaving towering red dunes and gravel plains in a long climate lock.

Age shows in sand. The Namib is less a temporary drought than a deep-time habit of dryness.
