Mount Fuji’s last eruption blanketed Edo in ash in 1707

Mount Fuji’s last eruption blanketed Edo in ash in 1707

Japan’s Mount Fuji last erupted in 1707–1708 during the Hoei eruption, sending ash that blanketed Edo (today’s Tokyo) and built a new crater on the volcano’s flank.

The iconic cone is a stratovolcano stacked from lava and ash layers; it remains closely monitored as an active system.

Beauty can sleep with one eye open. Fuji’s postcard silhouette is also a reminder that calm cones keep score underground.
