Mauna Loa is Earth’s largest active volcano by volume

Mauna Loa is Earth’s largest active volcano by volume

Mauna Loa on Hawaiʻi Island holds more rock than any other active volcano on Earth — a broad shield whose volume dwarfs most continental peaks even though its summit looks gentle from the air.

Basaltic lava spreads rather than piles into a sharp cone, so the mountain grows wide across the seafloor and above sea level. Eruptions can send flows racing toward coasts and communities when vents open on the flanks.

Size here is a story of patience, not a jagged skyline. Mauna Loa reminds us that Earth’s largest volcanoes can look calm until the next river of fire starts moving.
