Lichens are fungi and algae living as one partnership

Lichens are fungi and algae living as one partnership

A lichen looks like a single plant, but it is a fungus wrapped around photosynthetic algae or cyanobacteria — two kingdoms sharing one body on rock, bark, or soil.

The fungus builds the shelter and gathers water and minerals; the green partner makes sugars with sunlight. Together they survive places neither could colonize alone, from desert crusts to arctic stone.

Partnership is a survival strategy written in miniature. Lichens prove biodiversity is not only many species side by side, but species that become ecosystems inside each other.
