K2 has historically been far deadlier to climb than Everest

K2 has historically been far deadlier to climb than Everest

K2 on the Pakistan–China border is only slightly shorter than Everest, yet historically a much larger share of climbers who attempt it have died — earning nicknames like “Savage Mountain.”

Steeper routes, more technical ice and rock, fiercer storms, and fewer rescue options stack risk higher than on the crowded Everest corridors.

Altitude alone does not write danger. On K2, geometry and weather edit the odds before summit fever does.
