Iceland straddles a mid-ocean ridge that powers island-wide hot springs

Iceland straddles a mid-ocean ridge that powers island-wide hot springs

Iceland sits astride the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, where the North American and Eurasian plates pull apart, letting magma and heat rise unusually close to the surface across the island.

That setting feeds geysers, hot springs, and geothermal power plants, while rift valleys and fissure eruptions rewrite the landscape. Visitors can stand in places where new crust is still being made.

A country can be a ridge crest in disguise. Iceland shows mid-ocean spreading is not only undersea — it can steam, bathe, and light cities on land.
