Horses can sleep both standing up and lying down

A “stay apparatus” of ligaments and tendons locks the legs so horses can doze upright without collapsing — useful on open ground where predators appear.

True REM sleep still needs the body down for short stretches. Without those lying spells, horses become sleep-deprived even if they nap on their feet.

Standing rest is security mode; lying down is deep repair. Healthy herds need both settings of the same clock.
