Grand Prismatic Spring’s colors come from heat-loving microbes

Grand Prismatic Spring’s colors come from heat-loving microbes

Yellowstone’s Grand Prismatic Spring looks painted in rainbow rings, but the colors are living mats of thermophilic microbes sorted by water temperature from the deep blue center outward.

Near the hottest vent, few pigments survive; cooler shelves host orange, yellow, and brown communities that thrive in mineral-rich runoff. Steam and mineral deposits finish the postcard.

Beauty here is biology under stress. Grand Prismatic proves extreme heat can still host vivid life if chemistry and temperature line up just right.
